CAIRO: A sergeant was killed and a captain and an informer were injured in an armed attack on a checkpoint under the Ring Road in Khosous town of Qalyubia early Monday, Youm7 reported.

Qalyubia Security Director Saeed Shalaby said it was a terrorist assault, as masked men shot at the police from two cars.

Sergeant Mostafa Mohamed will receive a military funeral, while Captain Khaled Mohye and the informer, whose identity was disclosed only as Hassan, were transferred to the Zaytun General Hospital.

However, Qalyubia has recently been reported to be a hotspot for drug dealers who killed five policemen in February and March in the governorate. At least three drug dealers were killed in shootouts with the police in the following weeks.

At around the same time, Giza security forces foiled an attack on a checkpoint in the town of Badrashin; unidentified persons shot at the police who returned fire, forcing the assailants to escape to nearby farms, according to Youm7.

Many policemen have been killed in drive-by shootings since the 2013 ouster of President Mohamed Morsi.
