CAIRO: Assistant Security Director of North Sinai Yasser Hafez was hospitalized Wednesday after suffering shrapnel wounds after a roadside bomb detonated under his armored vehicle west of Arish city, Youm7 reported.
A security source told Youm7 that the bomb was detonated remotely while a security patrol was passing on Arish-Qantara Road, causing one injury.
Security forces were deployed around the site in search for the perpetrators.
Last month, Arish city witnessed the most recent wide-scale attack on security facilities in the restive North Sinai area, where 18 policemen were killed after a mortar shell hit their checkpoint.
Several roadside bombs have detonated in passing armored vehicles amid a series of attacks that resulted in hundreds of deaths among the armed forces and the police personnel in the restive North Sinai. The attacks, mostly claimed by the self-proclaimed Sinai Province, have resulted in casualties among citizens.
The army is going through a prolonged fight against terrorism in the peninsula, during which it claimed killing hundreds of militants and arresting many extremists.
