CAIRO: The 23rd edition of the international competition on Quran memorization and recitation will kick off in Egypt’s Red Sea resort city of Sharm al Sheikh Sunday.
A total of 160 Quran memorizers and reciters from 60 countries will take part in this year’s edition which will run until April 14, Ismail al Rory from the Endowment Ministry was quoted by Youm7.
The competition will be organized in four categories; memorization of the entire Quran with recitation principles and Quranic sciences, memorization of 15 paras (parts) of Quran with recitation principles for non-Arab participants, memorization of the entire Quran for children less than 12 years old, and finally memorization of 3 paras for the disabled aged less than 21, said Rory.
The participation of the contestants came in response to invitations sent earlier by the Endowment Ministry. According to Al Shorouq newspaper, Egypt has refused to invite Iran, Turkey and Qatar to send their representatives to the competition.
The panel of judges comprises of Quran masters from 9 countries, including Kuwait, Senegal, the UAE, Rory added.
