CAIRO: An EgyptAir flight headed for New York was delayed for an hour before taking off Friday after jackknife was found inside the plane before boarding, Youm7 reported.

The authorities are investigating whether the jackknife was thrown inside the plane after landing by a passenger to avoid being caught with it at the airport, or was placed inside the plane after that, a source at Cairo International Airport told Youm7.

The authorities said they searched the plane “thoroughly” and did not find any other objects after the plane crew reported the jackknife, the source said.

Egyptian airports have intensified security and hired U.K.-based Control Risks Co. to monitor safety measures after a Russian plane that took off from Sharm el-Sheikh Airport crashed over the Sinai last October.
