CAIRO: Security forces in Delta’s Beheira thwarted an attempt by 62 people of different nationalities to illegally emigrate via the Mediterranean Sea, Youm7 reported Friday.

The arrested, including 24 Egyptians and others from Sudan, Somalia and Eritrea, reportedly took three microbuses heading to the beach in Edko district. They were arrested on the International Coast Road before boarding an unlicensed boat to Italy.

Border guards have foiled hundreds of similar attempts by unregistered migrants during the past few years.

On Thursday, some 19 Africans were detained after illegally entering Aswan city in Upper Egypt, while on March 28, a total of 14 Sudanese and six Egyptian nationals were arrested in Beheira.

A total of 22,026 people of different nationalities were arrested over illegal immigration attempts in December, according to military spokesperson Mohamed Samir.
