Sisi, Iraqi PM discuss development in Arab region

CAIRO: President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi spoke by phone with Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi Wednesday and discussed developments in Iraq, Presidential spokesperson Alaa Youssef stated.

The two leaders reviewed the overall developments in the Arab region and stressed the importance of “preserving the unity of Arab states and reaching political settlements” to crises in the region, said the statement.

During the phone call, Sisi affirmed Egypt’s support to Iraq, its national state institutions as well as its efforts to counter terrorism and extremism in addition to the importance of supporting the unity of Iraqi people “to achieve the widest possible popular consensus and to restore necessary civil peace to establish Iraqi institutions,” according to the statement.

From his side, Abadi affirmed the strong relations that Egypt and Iraq share, lauding Egypt’s key role in the Arab world and its support to Iraq’s counter-terrorism efforts.
