CAIRO: An international tender for gold prospecting and exploration in eight areas in Egypt’s Eastern Desert will be put forward by June, sources at the Petroleum Ministry told Youm7 Tuesday.
The move is a part of the ministry’s plan to extend the country and exploration of gold, said the source, adding that security approvals for the eight areas are being obtained.
Preparing the eight areas to search for gold has began in October 2015 and the search for the gold will start immediately after contracts are signed with investors winning the tender, he added.
The Sukari, one of Egypt’s most productive gold mines is operated by Centamin-Egypt; a joint venture between the Egyptian Mineral Resources Authority and an Australian gold mining company.
It began production in 2001 with production ramping annual c.500,000 ounces by 2017.
