Detention renewed for policeman accused of killing driver over traffic dispute

CAIRO: A Cairo court ordered on Saturday a 15 day renewed detention of police officer pending further investigations over charges of attempted murder of a micro bus driver following a traffic dispute, Youm7 reported.

Captain Ahmed Samir, who works at the General Directorate for Information and Documentation, was suspended and referred to investigations last week after shooting at a driver, for reportedly obstructing his way while driving near a bus station in Heliopolis district, according to a Wednesday statement by the Interior Ministry.

The statement added that “a group of drivers interfered to stand by their colleague who assaulted the officer and caused him injuries, prompting [the officer] to use his gun.”

The driver was taken to hospital after he was injured in the thigh, according to the statement.
