CAIRO: Egyptian Supply police have confiscated 200 tons of contaminated salted fish nationwide over the past few days ahead of Sham el Nasim festival, announced the Ministry of Interior in a statement Saturday.
Salted fish sellers were arrested and are being investigated, the ministry added, noting that supply police personnel are on alert and have launched crackdown campaigns on the salted fish shops.
The biggest amount of the salted fish seized was in Delta’s Kafr el Sheikh governorate.
Last week, some 22 tons of Ringa (salt curred herring,) reportedly invalid for human consumption were seized in Delta’s Beheira, Youm7 reported.
Sham EL Nessim is an Egyptian public holiday marking the beginning of Spring and comes after the Easter.
