Police and ambulances wait outside an apartment with explosives in Mahalla May 2, 2016 - Youm7

CAIRO: The police discovered a bomb factory inside an apartment in Gharbia after it received reports of smoke coming from the apartment, Youm7 reported Tuesday.

Two bombs ready for detonation, a pistol, two sacks of nitrate, 30 kilos of TATB aromatic explosive, 80 liters of acid, 11 circuits, large amounts of nails and other equipment used in bomb manufacturing were found in the apartment in the town of Mahalla.

The surrounding buildings were evacuated and the bomb squad detonated four bombs.

Two men who used to visit the apartment were identified; one of them is a high school chemistry teacher.

The apartment’s doors were opened with water cannons, as seven policemen were killed in January by a strong blast after raiding an apartment suspected of housing terrorists in Haram, Giza.

Several apartments containing bomb making equipment have been discovered since former President Mohamed Morsi was ousted three years ago. Many amateur bomb manufacturers have also died making or carrying their own explosives in a number of governorates.
