CAIRO: Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry received a phone call on Thursday from his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov to discuss ongoing efforts to reinstate a cessation of hostilities in Syria and ways to resume political talks between the conflicting factions, according to state news agency MENA.

In an official statement issued Thursday, the spokesperson of Egypt’s foreign ministry Ahmed Abu Zeid stated that Shoukry’s contacts on the Syrian crisis comes within the framework of Egypt’s presidency of the UN Security Council and membership of the International Syria Support Group.

The group is likely to hold a meeting soon with Cairo’s participation to extend the truce in Syria and allow the resumption of peace talks in Geneva, according to Abu Zeid.

The Syrian army restored some locations that were under the control of Al-Nusra Front.
