CAIRO: Security forces in the restive North Sinai area detonated two improvised explosive devices and thwarted an attempt to attack a security patrol in the southern city of Sheikh Zuwayed, Youm7 reported Sunday.

This comes as military operations were launched against extremists in the northern tip of the peninsula. A security source told Youm7 that military operations are ongoing, under which “terrorist hot beds” are targeted and many suspects are arrested and armed groups are persecuted.

Youm7 quoted one of the residents as saying that they “heard bombing sounds from time-to-time around Sheikh Zuwayed city.”

Security forces have closed the area and intensified inspection procedures.

Hundreds of military and police personnel in the peninsula have been killed in numerous militant attacks that escalated since the 2013 ouster of President Mohamed Morsi.

The military has also announced that they have killed hundreds of extremists, destroying smuggling tunnels and arresting suspects.
