Nasr City’s slaughtered donkeys meant to feed circus animals: official

CAIRO: Slaughtered donkeys seized in Cairo’s Nasr City Thursday were prepared to be fed to circus animals, Youm7 quoted head of Nasr City Eastern District Medhat Abdel Latif as saying during a meeting of Cairo governorate officials.

The meat was confiscated because they were slaughtered outside the official slaughterhouse, Abdel Latif said, adding that the circus is located in the district of Zahara Nasr City.

The donkeys were found by officers from the Veterinary Directorate of Cairo; eleven were slaughtered and three were alive in a bare land next to Wataniya gas station in Nasr City.

According to Youm7, the meat will be neutralized and the live donkeys will be sent to the Giza Zoo to be fed to the animals.

However, when slaughtered donkeys are reportedly found, people fear their meat is sold as beef. In September 2015, two scrap workers were arrested for slaughtering a number of donkeys and selling the meat as beef.
