CAIRO: A total of 425 people of different nationalities have been arrested in illegal immigration attempts at the North Coast, according to a Tuesday statement by military spokesperson Mohamed Samir.

In the North Coast, 310 were arrested attempting to migrate to Europe via the Mediterranean, while 115 were detained in the Western desert in attempts to enter Libya illegally.

In an April 27 statement, Samir said 881 people from different countries were arrested on the North Coast and Western Desert in illegal immigration attempts.

Meanwhile, a tunnel was destroyed on the Sinai-Gaza border in North Sinai, and 3,609 trucks loaded with different commodities were allowed into the strip through Karam Abu Salem crossing, Samir said in his Tuesday statement.

The air force and border guards destroyed six four-wheel drive cars without plates near Siwa in the Western Desert.

Large amounts of “cancerous cigarettes” and drugs have also been seized by the military in different parts of the country.
