CAIRO: Minister Plenipotentiary Giampaolo Cantini, who headed the Italian agency for development cooperation, has been appointed as Italy’s ambassador to Cairo, according to Ansamed news agency.

The decision came after an Italian cabinet meeting headed by Prime Minister Matteo Renzi on Tuesday. In early April Italy recalled its ambassador to Cairo Maurizio Massari in protest at the lack of progress in the investigation by Egyptian authorities into the torture and murder of Giulio Regeni, an Italian student whose case has raised diplomatic tensions between the two countries.

Maurizio Massari becomes Italy’s new permanent representative to the European Union in Brussels, according to Ansamed.
