Today, President Abdel Fattah El Sisi met with the Secretary General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Mr. Houlin Zhao. The meeting was attended by Minister of Communications and Information Technology Yasser ElKady.
President El Sisi affirmed Egypt’s keenness to enhance cooperation with the ITU and actively participate in its activities. He lauded the leading role of the Union, given it is one of the UN agencies specialized in information and communication technologies and represents an international platform for governments and the private sector in this field.
President El Sisi noted Egypt’s interest in developing the communication and information technology sector, upgrading its infrastructure and constructing smart villages, in light of the fact that this sector helps create jobs for the youth and promotes development in Egypt. He looked forward to the ITU’s support for Egypt in this regard.
Mr. Houlin Zhao valued Egypt’s contributions to the ITU activities, in addition to hosting the ITU Regional office for Arab States. He lauded Egypt’s successful organization of the Global Symposium for Regulators (GSR) held in Sharm El Sheikh from 11 to 14 May. He referred to the wide unprecedented international participation in the symposium that included a large number of ministers of communications and information technology from different countries. Mr. Houlin Zhao asserted that organizing this international event in Egypt reflects the international community’s confidence in the potential and expertise of the Egyptian communication and information technology sector.
Mr. Houlin Zhao outlined projects underway in Egypt, which include the launching of the Regional ICT Center for Persons with Disabilities for the Arab Region and the Smart Groundwater Management for the Arab region. He expressed the Union’s readiness to partner with Egypt to implement the UN Sustainable Development Goals especially that the ICT sector contributes to realizing a number of these goals, such as ensuring quality education, promoting sustainable economic growth and empowering women.
President El Sisi welcomed projects and programs implemented by the ITU with Egypt. The President stressed the importance of creating a common international vision to prevent the misuse of the Internet to incite violence and terrorism, given that terrorist groups use it to propagate their extremist thoughts.
Mr. Houlin Zhao concurred that this issue is of significant importance, noting the international community’s growing understanding of this mounting threat and the need to combat challenges resulting from it within international efforts to combat terrorism and extremism.
The Minister of Communications and Information Technology referred to the proposal submitted by Egypt to the ITU members to host the World Radiocommunication Conference in 2019, which was welcomed and supported by Mr. Houlin Zhao.
