CAIRO: A total of 26 people were arrested in an illegal immigration attempt to Greece from Beheira Sunday, Youm7 reported.

The detainees, arrested by coast guards, had planned to take a boat from the Mediterranean city of Edko.

They told the police they paid a smuggler Mohamed H., known as Abu Khaled, 20,000 EGP each.

A total of 310 people of different nationalities have been arrested attempting to migrate to Europe via the Mediterranean, according to a May 10 statement by military spokesperson Mohamed Samir

A gang of accused human traffickers was arrested in April in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria as they were preparing 19 Egyptians to cross the sea to Italy, Youm7 reported.

The police received information that a group of people were at an apartment in Abis village and preparing to travel in a boat to Italy.

The owner of the apartment Raifa S., 35, brothers Amr S. and Hossam S., both 35-year-old manual laborers, and driver Assayed H., 36, were arrested inside the apartment. Nineteen people from Sharqia, Gharbia and Qalyubia in the Delta were found in the residence.
