ABU DHABI: Egypt’s agriculture ministry said on Monday it had bought 2.89 million tonnes of local wheat since the start of the local procurement season on April 15.

The figure is close to the 4 million tonnes of Egyptian wheat targeted by the world’s largest wheat importer in the 2016 season.

Egypt’s local wheat buying season usually ends around July.

The ministry has said that the pace of procurement has accelerated since a decision to open additional storage space was made by the cabinet.
