CAIRO: Six people were arrested for possession of firearms and explosive devices in Giza Monday. The arrest was made in a joint effort by the Egyptian Homeland Security and the Giza Investigations Department, a security source told Youm7.

Three were arrested in Imbaba with a machine gun. They are accused of planning to use it to target policemen. A police unit and bomb squad personnel arrested them at their residence, Youm7 reported.

Two brothers were arrested in Aboul Numrus town of Giza with firearms and explosive material. Investigations claim that they live in the Haram district but rented an apartment in Aboul Numrus to manufacture explosives to use them in “terrorist operations,” the source said.

A man was also arrested in Giza’s town of Kerdasa with a machine gun and a large amount of ammunition in his home, as well as two explosive devices in his garden. The bomb squad defused the explosives and the police continue to search for others who they believe to have explosive devices.

The Giza Investigations Department is also intensifying its efforts to arrest the perpetrators of an attack on a checkpoint in al-Maraziq town of Badrashin in Giza Sunday evening, as they escaped after a gun battle that left no casualties, Youm7 reported.
