CAIRO: A large dead whale was found washed up on Gharam Beach in Matrouh Monday, Youm7 reported.
Locals found the 15-meter long whale and reported it to the authorities, Al-Wafd newspaper reported. The humpback whale weighed about seven tons and is native to the Atlantic Ocean, the newspaper quoted the head of the Fisheries Authority in Matrouh as saying.
He added that the whale, whose body will be neutralized, had come to the Mediterranean Sea for mating, but died because the water depth did not exceed 10 meters.
Matrouh Security Director Hesham Lotfy instructed the Civil Protection Authority to recover the mammal’s body from the water, Youm7 reported.
A dead whale was found on the North Coast in June 2015, according to Al-Masry Al-Youm.
