CAIRO: A Qatari passenger was caught in an attempt to smuggle $148,000 into Egypt inside a cigarette carton and in her handbag Tuesday, Youm7 reported.

After all passengers arriving on a flight from Doha were searched, an officer suspected a woman and ordered another search; the cigarette carton was found under some clothes in her suitcase, and another amount of cash was found in her handbag.

The maximum cash a passenger can bring into the country via Cairo Airport is $10,000 or its equivalent in any other currency. The extra money seized with passengers is usually subject to confiscation by the airport authorities.

On April 27, a Nigerian passenger was stopped by Cairo Airport authorities before boarding a flight to Turkey for exceeding the limit of cash allowed to be taken outside of the country, which is also $10,000. The passenger was carrying $12,000 and 14,000 euros.

On April 20, a passenger of an undisclosed nationality was reportedly stopped by airport authorities for carrying $17,000.
