CAIRO: Egypt’s Minister of Defense has been ordered to hold 131 breakfast banquets nationwide for Egyptian Muslims living in impoverished areas during the holy month of Ramadan, Youm7 reported Thursday.

Cairo and Giza will hold the lion’s share of the banquets as the military has organized for a total of 42 banquets to be held daily over Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic Calendar during which Muslims worldwide fast from dawn to the dusk.

Five days ago, the army distributed 1.5 million boxes of basic food commodities at a reduced price to people living in poverty, upon direction from President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi ahead of the month of Ramadan, which started Monday.

Over the past few weeks, Egypt’s markets witnessed a price hike in basic foods such as rice and sugar. Other commodities, such as vegetables and chickens, also saw an increase in price.
