Egypt’s prosecutor orders release of 26 Zamalek fans
The East Cairo Prosecution on Tuesday evening has ordered the release of 26 Zamalek fans after their detention for two days on charges of allegedly assaulting security forces, Youm7 reported.
The detainees were released with 1,000 EGP bail each pending investigations over numerous charges including “resisting authorities, rioting, vandalizing and storming public and private utilities, possession of arms and inciting protest” following Zamalek’s 2-1 loss against South Africa’s Sundowns in a match held Sunday at Petro Sports Stadium in Cairo.
The fans denied all the said charges.
Israeli embassy in Cairo posts video of TV program aired on the eve of 1979 peace treaty
Israeli embassy in Cairo posted on its Facebook page video footages of a TV program aired hours before the signing of its 1979 peace treaty with Egypt.
The video, presented by Egyptian anchor Moataz al Demerdash and reportedly aired simultaneously on the Egyptian and Israeli TVs, “marks the inauguration of Israel’s new ambassador to Egypt” David Govrin, who arrived in Cairo Sunday to assume his new post in succession of his predecessor Haim Koren, according to the Facebook post.
Govrin was the head of the Jordan desk at the Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem until February this year. He also has served in a series of positions throughout the Middle East over the years, including at the embassy in Cairo, according to Haaretz, Govrin speaks Arabic and is a doctor of Middle East history.
45 sentenced to 1 year imprisonment for illegal gold mining
Edfu Misdemeanor Court on Tuesday has sentenced 45 people for one year imprisonment on charges of illegal gold mining, Youm7 reported.
The court also fined the convicts 100 EGP ($11) each for carrying out illegal gold exploration activities last month in several areas on the Edfu-Marsa Allam highway near Edfu, 90 kilometers south of Upper Egypt’s governorate of Aswan.
Video shows forces dragging woman off house; Police denies assault as “untrue”
Al-Mewar TV channel aired Monday a video showing police men allegedly dragging a woman, while she was screaming as she and her children were forced to evacuate their house in Dokki district, Giza on grounds the building is violating construction law.
Residing in the building since 2009, Rehab Badawy, the assaulted women, told Al-Mehwar TV channel Monday on the phone that the incident took place last week. She went on explaining the attack saying that the forces broke the door, dragged her in pajamas outside the house, carried her into the police vehicle and detained her son.
In her statements, Badawy addressed President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi demanding “her right” after she was humiliated.
However, the Ministry of Interior denied the assault in a statement posted on Facebook, saying that the accusation of policemen being involved in this incident is “untrue.”
The statement said that the policemen were only securing the building while Giza governorate forces were executing a knock-down decision to the alleged violating house.
Egypt’s Mufti, Al Azhar Imam condemn Germany train attack
Egypt’s Mufti Shawky Allam has condemned the recent attack carried out by an Afghani refugee in a train in southern Germany, Youm7 reported.
“Such inhuman acts are tarnishing the image of Islam, which called for tolerance and coexistence, love and compassion, it also contradicts the Holy Quran and the Sunnah which affirmed the sanctity of terrifying people,” Allam was quoted as saying in a statement by Youm7 Tuesday.
A teenage Afghan refugee armed with an axe and knife injured four people on a train near Wurzburg, Bavaria on Tuesday before being shot dead by police, according to Youm7.
Grand Imam of Al Azhar Sheikh Ahmed al Tayeb also denounced the incident and asserted the institution’s “firm stance against all forms of violence and terrorism, which has no connection to Islam.”
Parliament approves extension of ‘state of emergency’ in Sinai for 3 months
Egypt’s parliament approved on Tuesday a presidential decree to extend the state of emergency in Northern Sinai, Youm7 reported.
A total of 431, out the parliament’s 596 members voted in favor of President Abdel Fatah al Sisi’s decree, issued on July 12, to extend the state of emergency in specific areas of North Sinai for three months as of July 29.
As part of the emergency, curfews are imposed in some regions in the restive peninsula, mostly located in North Sinai and along the borders with Israel and the Gaza Strip.
The emergency was first imposed in October 2014, following a deadly attack on an army checkpoint that left 33 soldiers dead. The emergency has been extended several times since then.
Sisi receives spiritual leader of India’s Bohra Muslim community
President Abdel Fatah al Sisi received on Tuesday Sheikh Mufaddal Saifuddin, the spiritual leader of India’s Bohra Muslim community and his accompanying delegation, Youm7 reported.
During the meeting, Sisi thanked Sheikh Mufaddal for the Bohra’s contributions in the restoration of several mosques in Cairo, including the millennium old Al Hakim Mosques, presidential spokesperson Alaa Youssef said in a statement Tuesday.
The two sides also exchanged views on a range of humanitarian and Islamic issues related to the promotion of a culture of religious tolerance and peaceful co-existence among various faiths and sects.
Russian plane crash probe ‘enters its final stage’: minister
Egyptian Civil Aviation Minister Sherif Fathi has announced that the investigation into the crash of Russia’s A321 passenger plane over the Sinai Peninsula in late October 2015 enters its final stage, Russian news agency Sputnik reported, citing a Tuesday statement from the Russian Transport Ministry.
The statement came during Fathi’s meeting with Russian Transport Minister Maxim Sokolov held in Moscow.
“Information provided by Fathi on the final stage of probe into the causes of the accident “became an important moment of the meeting,” the ministerial statement said.
On Sunday, Fathy flew to Moscow where he met with Russian senior officials to discuss resumption of the direct flights between the two countries, which were suspended shortly after a Russian A321 plane crashed in the Sinai late Oct killing all 224 people on board.
Sisi attends graduation ceremony for police cadets
President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi attended Tuesday graduation ceremony for Police Academy cadets who performed combat trainings to show their skills in dealing with terrorist acts, Youm7 reported.
A total of 1, 534 police cadets will graduate from the Police Academy and will be honored during Tuesday ceremony, which was attended also by Prime Minister Sherif Ismail,Minister of Defense Sedki Sobhi, Sheikh al-Azhar Ahmed al-Tayeb, Pope of Alexandria Tawadros II, Presidential advisor for national projects Ibrahim Mahlab, and other public figures.
Arab League summit preparatory meetings kick off Wed.
The preparatory meetings for the 27th Arab Summit scheduled to be held in Nouakchott July 25, 26 will start Wednesday, Youm7 reported.
Egypt will chair this year’s summit dubbed the “Summit of Hope” which will focus on how to enhance the role of the Arab League in Arab, regional and international arenas as well as ways to support the joint Arab action at the political, economic and social levels, according to a statement from the Egyptian Presidential office.
In February, the Arab League announced that Mauritania will host the African Summit due to be held July 25-26 after Morocco announced its withdrawal to host the summit. In February Reuters reported that the Moroccan Foreign Ministry said in statement that the summit would be like an ordinary occasion “to pronounce speeches that give a false impression of unity.”
EGX30 declines by0.42%, EGX70 rises by0.06% on Tuesday closing
The Egyptian Exchange (EGX) indexes showed a mixed performance on closing Tuesday, with the benchmark index EGX30 dropping 0.42 percent due to profit taking to close at 7596.96 points, Youm7 reported.
Meanwhile, the small- and medium-sized enterprises (SME) index EGX-70 edged up 0.06 percent to close at 359.6 points, while the broader EGX100 index dropped by 0.12 percent to 768.44 points.
Market capitalization incurred losses worth 793 million EGP (about$89m,) to record 405.439 billion EGP during the closing session of Tuesday.
Kuwait’s Zain to meet Egyptian minister over 4G telecom license
(REUTERS): Officials from Kuwaiti mobile operator Zain will meet Egypt’s telecommunications minister on Wednesday to discuss the terms for obtaining a fourth-generation (4G) license in Egypt, a senior telecom ministry official said on Tuesday.
The official also told Reuters that Saudi Telecom, China Telecom and a European firm had expressed interest in acquiring a 4G license in the country of more than 90 million.
“Zain’s chief executive officer and chief financial officer … will arrive in Cairo today to meet with the minister… and officials from the National Telecom Regulatory Authority tomorrow to discuss conditions and details of the 4G licenses,” he said.
Barclays begins Egypt sale process, at least two interested – sources
(REUTERS): Barclays has begun a formal process to sell its Egyptian unit, with at least two banks from the Middle East and North Africa region expressing interest in the business, sources familiar with the matter said on Tuesday.
The UK-based lender is offloading its Africa unit as part of a plan by Chief Executive Jes Staley to simplify its structure and seek higher shareholder returns, although attempts to sell all the assets together have come up against difficulties including the disparate nature of the business.
Emirates NBD Egypt suspends credit, debit card use abroad amid dollar shortage
(Reuters) Emirates NBD Egypt said it was suspending use of debit and credit cards abroad, a control intended to keep hard currency inside the bank as Egypt endures a crippling forex shortage.
Egypt has suffered from a shortage of dollars in the banking system that has sapped its ability to import since a 2011 uprising drove away tourists and foreign investors, both crucial sources of hard currency.
31.3 % increase in value of implemented construction operations by Public sector in 2014/2015: CAPMAS
The total value of the implemented construction operations by public business sector companies reached 20.6 billion EGP in 2014/2015 versus 15.7 billion EGP for 2013/2014, anincrease of 31.3%, according to an annual statistical Bulletin issued by the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics Tuesday.
Marina fin whale re-appears
A fin whale that has been spotted two weeks ago in Marina town, north coast, re-appeared for 10 minutes and then disappeared again, Mohamed Essawi, general director of northern region reserves, told Youm7.
Essawi added that this is an indication that the whale is swimming in an area of appropriate depth and abundant food.
He repeated his warnings to citizens against harming or disturbing the whale if spotted near shores.
