Low-income people will be “taken into account” in new electricity prices: minister

Egypt’s Electricity Minister Mohamed Shaker said he will soon unveil new rate categories for electricity consumption in a bid to trim the state’s subsidies for the electricity sector, Al Ahram reported on Friday.

“The low-income people will be taken into consideration when setting the new tariff,” Shaker said in an interview on Dream TV Channel. He added that the new prices have been already introduced in July and will be applied retrospectively.

In July 2015, Egypt has raised electricity prices for mid-to-high household usage by an average of 19 percent, for the second consecutive year as part of a five-year plan to lift electricity subsidies.

Egypt’s electricity consumption is much higher than the minimum electricity requirement in low income countries, according to a report issued by the World Bank in September 2015.
