Egypt exempts imported sugar from customs duties

Egypt’s Prime Minister Sherif Ismail on Thursday issued a decision exempting imported sugar from customs duties till May 30, 2017.

The decision comes amid shortage in the basic commodity that has been recently monitored in the local markets across the country. The decision was published in the official gazette on Thursday.

Earlier this year, Egypt raised import tariffs on raw cane and raw beet sugar to 20 percent from 2 percent, according to a United States Department of Agriculture report.

Egypt consumes around 3.2 million tons of sugar annually but produces just over 2 million tons.

 

Air Defense stadium trial adjourned to Dec. 21

The Cairo Criminal Court on Thursday adjourned the trial of 16 fans of Ultras White Knights on charges of rioting to December 21, Youm7 reported.

The case dates back to February 2015, when at least 20 fans were killed after security forces violently dispersed fans crowding the entrance to the Air Defense stadium to attend an Egyptian premier league football match between Zamalek SC and ENPPI.

The defendants face charges including involvement in violence and sabotage acts in addition to killing and injuring policemen. The proceedings of the case resumed early September after more than 5 month hiatus.

 

82 detained youth released by Presidential pardon

A total of 82 detained youth were released on Wednesday per a pardon decree issued by President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, Youm7 reported.

The released youth includes T.V. anchorman Islam El Beheiri, who serves one-year prison sentence over charges of insulting religion.

Most f youth released were academic students who were arrested over breaching the protest law. On Saturday, member of a governmental committee tasked to examine the youth inmates’ situations Mohamed Abdel-Azizi said that a group of people and youth detained over violating the protest law or over accusations of publishing false news will be released per a presidential pardon.

He told youm7 that the committee has filed a report includes all names of the first group of the youth who will be released to President Sisi.

 

A total of 203 prisoners would be released per a presidential pardon on the occasion of the October War Victory, after Prison Sector Committee reviewed the prisoners’ conditions, Youm7 reported on Thursday. Only 94 inmates will be released under certain conditions.

 

Egypt’s FM meets with Greek counterpart

Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met with his Greek counterpart Nikolaos Kotzias on Thursday to discuss the bilateral relations, said Egyptian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ahmed Abu Zeid on his official Twitter account.

In October 2015, Shoukry visited Greece to participate in the “Religious and Cultural Pluralism and Peaceful Coexistence in the Middle East” International Conference.

 

Egyptian parliamentarian delegation visit Germany Monday

A delegation from the Egyptian House of Representatives will head on Monday to Germany in a visit aims to strengthen the bilateral relations between both countries, Parlmany reported Parliamentarian Karim Darwish on Thursday.

He added that the delegation will participate in a meeting due to be held in the Berlin Institute of Technology (TU Berlin) to discuss the ways of TU Berlin’ partnership in the new Modern Technology University that will be constructed in the new administrative capital.

 

Parliamentarian slams absence of factories for baby formula  

Health Committee of the Parliament member Mostafa Abu Zeid criticized absence of factories produce baby formula, after the price of one imported formula can reached 100 EGP, Youm7 reported on Thursday.

He saw that there is a need to fix the price of formula cans to control the prices. Egypt sees shortage in baby formula since 2015.

The parliamentarian said that a national factory for baby formula will be established to ease the crisis.
