The most senior woman police officer in Afghanistan’s troubled Helmand province has been shot and seriously injured by unknown gunmen today, an official has said.
The attack on Lieutenant Negar – known only by her surname – comes after her female predecessor was killed last July.
A spokesman for the governor of Helmand said that Lieutenant Negar was shot near the police headquarters in the provincial capital, Lashkar Gar.
Lieutenant Negar was rushed to hospital and is expected to survive.
