Two officers were killed after anonymous gunmen targeted an army vehicle in New Salehia City in Sharqia governorate, Nile Delta, on Tuesday, a military source said on Wednesday.
The attack resulted in the death of First Lieutenant Mohammed Abdul Karim Ahmed and lower ranking officer Saad Atta Abdo after being shot.
Captain Khaled Mohamed Zaki and soldier Abul Naga Fathy were also injured in the assault.
Four gunmen opened fire on the army vehicle as it was heading to another military unit, the source said.
Military police and other security agencies in Sharqia are combing the Salehia area and the perimeter of the desert areas to pursue the perpetrators, although no suspects have been arrested, the source added.
Witnesses to the incident uploaded a video to social networking site Facebook, apparently filmed shortly after the attack. It shows dead bodies of soldiers and a man shouting “call the ambulance.”
Egypt’s Grand Mufti Shawky Allam condemned the brutal “terrorist attack,” in a statement on Tuesday, adding that all acts of terrorism are forbidden by Islam.
The Grand Mufti expressed his sincere condolences to the families of the martyrs, and wished a speedy recovery for the injured.
