Chairman, al-Wafd Party
El-Sayyed el-Badawi is an Egyptian politician. He became chairman of al-Wafd party in 2010 after internal elections, winning over former chairman Mahmoud Abaza.
He is also owns Egyptian Al-Hayat TV and Al-Dostor newspaper.
El-Badawi graduated from the Faculty of Pharmacy at Alexandria University in 1973.
Before Egypt’s November 2010 parliamentary elections el-Badawi refused any foreign supervision of Egyptian elections. El-Badawi, like the regime of ousted President Hosni Mubarak, said such supervision violated Egypt’s sovereignty.
His purchase of Al-Dostor newspaper caused considerable controversy, particularly among liberals who worried the takeover would favor then-President Mubarak at the expense of objectivity.
