CAIRO: “Egypt had the misfortune of seeing Hosni Mubarak come to power in 1981, regardless of his military role in the 1973 October War,” Presidential Media Advisor Ahmed El-Meslemany said on Tuesday.

El-Meslemany added that whereas South Korea, Malaysia, Brazil and China saw great progress and growth during the past 30 years; Egypt witnessed a period of significant decline as Mubarak lacked vision and talent and only had projects that targeted the maintenance of his grip on power.

El-Meslemany praised the eras of Gamal Abdel Nasser and Anwar Sadat which “saw serious attempts to modernize Egypt,” adding that Nasser’s renaissance project was interrupted by the 1967 war, while Sadat’s national project for independence and development was interrupted by his assassination.
