CAIRO- Sources in the Egyptian National Railways denied rumors of the resumption of train service by the beginning of the school year and reiterated that the suspension is due to security reasons in a Saturday statement to Youm7.
The sources said authorities feared riots on trains in such a tenuous security situation, as well as the use of trains to “transport weapons” or to conduct acts of “terrorism.”
They added, “We cannot launch train services without permission from security forces. We understand that they are restoring stability to the country.”
All trains have stopped since the dispersal of the Rabaa and Nahda sit-ins, in anticipation of violence targeting passengers or railway facilities.
