Al-Azhar University, a prestigious Islamic university, and the biggest Sunni Islamic institution in the world, will open a sister university in Malaysia by 2014, a Cairo-based diplomat said Sunday.
In statements to the state-run MENA news agency, the Malaysian ambassador to Cairo Dato Jaafar said that Alexandria University is mulling over a similar initiative, to have a branch in Kuala Lumpur.
The Egyptian study system appeals to Malaysians, Jaafar explained, referring to religious and cultural convergence between both countries.
There are 11,000 Malaysian students in Egypt, he said, adding that many Asian students will take advantage of the opening of Egyptian Universities in Malaysia, as Malaysia has 100,000 foreign students.
Egypt has a special role in Africa and the Arab world, especially in Malaysia, as every family has a member studying in Egypt, Jaafar said.
