CAIRO: Foreign Ministry Spokesman Badr Abdel Atti denied on Wednesday statements attributed to Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy about Egypt’s intention to turn to the military option against the Palestinian organization Hamas.
In a ministry statement, Atti said that the minister did not talk about military action against Hamas, while he stressed that the Egyptian authorities would not allow Hamas to undermine its national security.
Atti also said that Egypt is keen to protect its national security in the Sinai. He added that any attempt to undermine Egypt’s national security, either by Hamas or other groups, will be responded strictly.
Atti assured that the Egyptian response to any violation would not transcend the Egyptian territories, adding that the main role any government should perform is to provide security to its citizens.
He continued that Fahmy told London-based Al-Hayat newspaper that the relations with Hamas witnessed notable deterioration due to the relation between Hamas and Egypt’s former government and the recent violence in the Sinai.
Atti commented on his country’s refusal to lift the current blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip. “We do not accept torturing the Palestinian citizens in Gaza, while we insist on implementing the law on our territories,” he said.
