CAIRO: Amr Moussa, chairman of the 50-member committee called for a meeting with the committee’s members on Thursday to discuss the legality of drafting a new constitution.
The constitutional declaration of July 9 states that the constitution is to be amended, while several political figures and members of the committee itself called for drafting a new constitution.
The committee’s session early Thursday witnessed a debate between some members over the purpose of the committee, whether to create a new constitution or to amend the existing one.
Sameh Ashour, chairman of the Bar Association and a member of the committee, demanded determining whether the constitution is to be amended or a new constitution is to be drafted.
Moussa replied to Ashour saying that the committee’s quorum is incomplete, and that voting is not needed as everyone is discussing the creation of a new constitution, but the legality of such an act must first be addressed.
Moussa added that there will be a meeting with the presidency if needed.
