CAIRO: Security forces have intensified efforts to arrest leading Muslim Brotherhood figure Essam el-Erian following his appearance on Al-Jazeera Mubasher Misr where he called for protests to support former President Mohamed Morsi.
“Erian is a serious threat to Egypt’s national security due to his dangerous statements,” security sources said Monday, speaking to Youm7 on condition of anonymity. “All the information and private data gathered about Erian gets us closer to capturing him.”
On Sept. 22, Al-Jazeera Mubasher Misr aired a video message from Erian inciting the Brotherhood’s student members to protest during their first day of the school year against what he described as “the bloody, fascist military coup that has hijacked the people’s will and interrupted the course of democracy.”
“We will continue the fight,” added Erian.
The government has launched a wave of arrests against members of the Muslim Brotherhood since the ousting of President Morsi on July 3, accusing most of them of inciting violence that threatens Egypt’s national security.
