CAIRO: Military spokesperson Colonel Ahmed Ali said on Sunday said that Defense Minister Abdel Fatah Al-Sisi has no political ambitions.
In an interview with Saudi satellite channel Al-Arabiya, Ali referred to Sisi’s repeated statements that the army chief General’s entire ambitions are fulfilled in his current post.
The campaign launched earlier this month calling on Sisi to run for presidential office comes in a national context that is difficult to contain, Ali explained.
Prospects of Sisi running the upcoming presidential elections worry different political groups in Egypt. Sisi has reiterated that he has no intention of becoming president.
Ali said, in the same interview, that the retired Generals Samy Anan, former chief of staff, and Ahmed Shafik, Mubarak’s last Prime Minister, are eligible to run in the election, but that the Armed Forces would not name, endorse, or support any candidate.
