PARIS: France urged its citizens willing to travel to Egypt to follow its travel advisories carefully.

In a statement Saturday, the French Foreign Ministry pointed out to an attack on foreign nationals that took place near Taba on Feb. 16, killing several tourists.

This is the first terrorist attack targeting foreigners in Egypt since Feb. 22, 2009, the ministry said, adding that the terrorist threat in the Sinai Peninsula makes it necessary to scrupulously respect the safety precautions issued by the ministry.

The situation remains unpredictable in Egypt and regularly produces events affecting public order, including demonstrations and rallies – often unannounced, it said.

Travelers are encouraged to consider strictly precautionary statements and recommendations listed for different parts of the country to keep abreast of current events in Egypt, it added.
