CAIRO: Adel al-Adawy was officially named the new Minister of Health on Saturday by new Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab, despite objections by doctors who opposed selecting a person who has been serving in the ministry for a period during which they say no progress was made.

Adawy, a professor and former vice-president of Benha University, succeeds former minister Maha Rabat.

This is not the first time Adawy has been nominated for the position of minister. He served in the last three ministries as Deputy Minister of Curative Medicine. He was previously nominated during the government of former Prime Minister Kamal El-Ganzouri. Among his tasks, Adawy sent medical missions to African countries, and supported diplomatic relations with countries including Somalia.

Adawy was also part of a project organizing the transfer of patients between hospitals, particularly emergency cases, to decrease the number of delayed cases.
