CAIRO: Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim promised to release all detained students with no criminal charges, according to the Head of Egypt’s Student Union Mohamed Badran.
Badran and several other leaders from the student union met with Ibrahim at the Ministry of Interior’s headquarters on Saturday.
According to Badran, Ibrahim said the Ministry of Interior would need more time to be able to prepare security forces to enter university campuses, which would not be possible in the coming period as the second semester is too short.
Last month a Cairo court approved the return of security forces to police university campuses, which has received much condemnation. Over the past several months, amidst outbreaks of student protests across universities in Egypt, police have sporadically entered campuses in order to quell demonstrations.
