CAIRO: Qatar’s ambassador Saif Al-Buainain returned to Egypt to preside over a Sunday meeting of the permanent representatives of the Arab League’s members after spending over a month in Doha.
Buainain’s stay in Doha was rumored to be an unofficial withdrawal of the ambassador.
Representatives of the Arab League are meeting to draft a report on developing joint Arab action, which will be presented at the Arab summit to be held in Kuwait in late March.
The Qatari ambassador did not answer reporters’ questions on whether he would return to his country after the meeting.
The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs had summoned Buainain several times to inform him of Egypt’s displeasure at Doha’s policies towards Egypt and hinted at the possible withdrawal of the country’s ambassadors.
Kuwait is reportedly leading an initiative prior to the Arab summit to alleviate tension between Arab states.
Egypt appreciates Kuwait’s attempts to create harmony between members of the league by advising some Arab states that they should not interfere in other states’ internal affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Badr Abdel Atty said in a statement Saturday.
