3.5 billion EGP in 588 tax evasion cases discovered

CAIRO: The Ministry of Interior’s Tax Evasion Department detected 588 cases of tax evasion, totaling 3.5 billion EGP (U.S. $502 million), according to a statement released Monday.

The finds come under Ministry of Interior’s crackdown, in collaboration with security directorates nationwide, on tax evasion, which dramatically harms the national economy, reported Youm7.

The Tax Evasion Department reported that 387 of the tax evasion cases involved commercial and professional activities, with the total value of the tax revenues from these cases reaching 2.61 billion EGP. The other 201 cases involved sales tax, totaling 926 million EGP.

Further, the department reported 70 customs smuggling cases and 683 cases of real estate tax evasion nationwide.
