CAIRO: A campaign supporting the candidacy of human rights defender Khaled Ali for president issued a second press release about the elections on Tuesday, referring to themselves as “a group of great Egyptian people who have always suffered injustice and oppression.”
“After all the attempts to exploit the revolution of January 2011, and the excessive violations of Egyptian citizens’ human rights and dignity, it became necessary that we should continue our path to justice, equality and dignity, in alliance with the person most suitable to achieve our revolutionary goals,” the statement read.
The group also expressed what it described as the Egyptian people’s hopes to rid the country of tyranny, fascism and injustice, as well as outsiders who interfere in Egypt’s affairs, through a common vision that combines justice and democracy, “before another volcano erupts.”
The group sees that potential in Ali, they said.
Last week, the group held a meeting at the headquarters of the Egyptian Center for Economic and Social Rights (ECESR) and issued a press release declaring their support for Ali as a presidential candidate, recalling his history in the struggle and fight to protect people’s rights.
