CAIRO: Minister of Antiquities Mohamed Ibrahim revealed Wednesday new information about a stone plate that was believed to have been stolen from one of the warehouses in Saqqara, and later appeared in a Switzerland auction.
Interpol reported the incident last September. The minister told Youm7 that the Egyptian authorities have not confirmed if the plate that was stolen is the same one being sold at the auction, but the ministry halted the auction anyway.
He added that the ministry formed two committees to check the inventory of the warehouses, but they refused. The plate is under the supervision of the Grand Egyptian Museum, he said.
The minister explained that he has to bring the plate from the auction to Egypt in order to check its authenticity, or send an archaeological team to Switzerland, but the ministry does not have the funds to do that.
